If decent early-in-the-week weather lasted until yesterday afternoon, the regular season for Vermillion High track and field athletes came to an end at the Big 8 Conference meet in Madison, setting the stage for the regional meet in Lennox next Thursday.
It takes a first- or second-place finish in any individual or relay event at the regional to earn state meet qualification. In addition, any other placer who meets or beats the regular-season time, height or distance standard in any event also qualifies to be at the state meet in Madison and Sioux Falls on May 27-28.
As of Tuesday of this week, Vermillion athletes had already qualified for state in several events. On the girls' side they are:
� Blair Gilkyson, 800-meter run, with a best time of 2:28.20.
� Blair Gilkyson, 1600-meter run, 5:31.30.
� Blair Gilkyson, 3200-meter run, 11:51.50.
� Beth Szymonski, shot put, 36'9".
� Beth Szymonski, discus, 121'5".
� Mackenzie Huber, pole vault, 8'9".
� Medley relay, 4:28.20.
In boys' events these Tanagers are assured of state meet participation:
� Cody Olson, 100-meter dash, :11.20.
� Cody Olson, 200-meter dash, :22.80.
� 800-meter relay, 1:33.30.
� 1600-meter relay, 3:30.50.
� Medley relay, 3:42.90.
Tanager athletes competed with the state's and the region's best in two Sioux Falls meets last weekend. At the fabled Howard Wood Dakota Relays, the Tanager boys 1600-meter relay team placed third in their Class "A" race in a time of 3:30.71. The 800-meter relay team placed seventh in 1:33.49. Will Mart finished eighth among a dynamite field of contestants with a throw of 143'5".
At O'Gorman's invitational meet Mart was second in the discus event at 139'4". Nathan Ford placed third in the 3200-meter run in 11:38.56. Tanner Anderson was the fourth-place man in the 1600 in 4:52.71. Nick Jensen placed fifth in the shot put at 45'9 1/2". In girls' events Beth Szymonski placed fourth in the discus with a heave of 104'3".
