The VFW 15-16 Teeners of Vermillion rode a three-hit pitching performance by Collin Bertram to a 15-0 win over Dakota Valley at Prentis Park Monday night.
Vermillion scored 10 runs in the fourth inning before any outs were recorded to break the game open. Tanner Settles was a hitting leader, going 2-for-4 at the plate and driving home four tallies.
In the JV game a two-run single by Joe Mazour scored Colin Olson and Peter Haught in the bottom of the final inning to lift Vermillion to a 10-9 victory. Mazour was also the winning pitcher in relief after Jayce Huska threw the first two innings. Vermillion had rallied from an 8-4 deficit with a four-run fourth in which Seth Miller, Eric James and Seth Heine drove in runs.
In their season openers last week the 15-16 varsity lost at Beresford, 6-5 while the JVs won 8-5. In the varsity game Huska had a double and a triple with an RBI to lead the offense.
The 15-16 varsity is scheduled at a tournament in South Sioux City this weekend if floodwaters permit. They will play at Beresford next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
