Announcement: For several years the VCDC and the City of Vermillion, along with a few contributing businesses, have been able to fully fund the communitys annual 4th of July festivities in Barstow Park. With rising costs and fewer donations over the past two years we need to seek additional funding sources in order to offer this event to the community. Our goal is to raise an additional $4,000 so we really need your assistance. Volunteers have been approaching businesses with canisters to place at the register to help raise the necessary funding. If you have not yet been approached by volunteers and are willing to have a canister placed in your business, please contact the VCDC office (624-5571) and we will deliver one. Also, if your business is willing to make a separate contribution to the celebration it would be greatly appreciated.

The Vermillion Area Community Foundation is accepting proposals for projects to improve our community. Forms for submitting proposals by groups or organizations are available at the Chamber of Commerce office. While funds available are limited we can fully fund small one time requests or partially fund larger projects. Your annual donations to our Foundation will provide us with increasing funds each year for worthwhile projects.
The Yankton Police Department, with the assistance of The Heartland Humane Society and The Humane Society of the United States have set up a temporary Animal Shelter at the 4-H grounds, to provide a safe place for the pets of those affected by the flooding. The use of Alcoa Arena to establish this temporary shelter has been generously donated by the Miracle Hockey Association, and supplies have been donated by Petsmart. Volunteers are needed also. Please contact Animal Control Officer at 605-661-9494, or the Yankton Police Department, at 605-668-5210.

Invitation to community organizations to join in the 2011 Tanager Volunteer Day, Tuesday, Sept. 20. Students will be participating in a full day of work from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students will work in groups of 14-17, but the groups can be adjusted if needed. Please dare to challenge Vermillion students many things can be accomplished in a short time. The students enjoy cleaning, painting, vacuuming, planting trees, scrapping paint, or almost any task you need completed. Last year one group was solely committed to assisting elderly and homebound individuals in our community. If you know anyone that could use a little help with gardens, windows, or just a visit please contact Lenni Billberg at email@example.com.
