Red Sox improve record

The Vermillion Red Sox laced Elk Point 13-5 Sunday to improve their record for the young season to 2-3.

Tyler Candor slugged a home run and a double, Mike Hessenius had a double, and Jon Elliott posted four hits for the victors.  Nate Olsen was the Red Sox starter, Eric McGhland pitched the sixth and seventh innings, and Robin Chute threw the final two stanzas.

Over last weekend the Sox lost twice in Brandon Valley's Border Classic tournament played at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls.  In a 4-2 loss to Brandon Valley, Colby Lessmann and Dan Hansen had doubles.  Andrew Benton threw 5 1/3 innings for Vermillion with McGhland finishing up.

In their other tournament game the Red Sox lost to the Sioux City Saints, 7-4.  The two Vermillion opponents were the two teams which reached the championship game with Brandon Valley winning, 6-0.  Teams from Minneapolis and Spencer, Iowa, also played in the event.

Last week the Red Sox trekked to Renner twice, losing to the Monarchs, 10-1, but winning over the Roadrunners, 16-0.

Monarch pitchers struck out 16 Red Sox batters in their win.  Colby Lessmann's double was one of only two Vermillion hits while Renner had 12, including two home runs each for Michael Clapp and Tim Harker.  Working on the mound for the Red Sox were Nick Weeter, Garrett Linhardt and Elliott.

In the win over the Roadrunners Candor homered and Keton Rowe and Benton each had a double for Vermillion.

The Red Sox will play at Akron at 2 p.m. Sunday and will be home Tuesday and Wednesday of next week against the Sioux Falls Saints and Brandon Valley, respectively.
