LSS participates in Emergency Homeowner’s Loan Program

Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota is one of three grantees in the state of South Dakota to participate in the Emergency Homeowners Loan Program (EHLP). This was announced on June 20. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that South Dakota will be receiving $2,051,563 to assist homeowners through EHLP. EHLP funds are part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.

EHLP funds help homeowners who are at least 90 days late on their mortgage payments, and unemployed or working fewer hours because of the economy or a medical condition. Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) of Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota was awarded sessions in four states including Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota.

If qualified for assistance under EHLP and selected, homeowners will be able to access an interest free loan to help pay their past due amount and a portion of their monthly mortgage payments up to 24 months or $50,000, whichever comes first. Funds are limited and not all eligible applicants may receive funding.

Eligible homeowners have until Friday, July 22, to complete the pre-applicant screening worksheet. After the July 22 application date, a lottery process will be used to determine which applicants will receive funding. The worksheets are available and the pre-screening can be conducted over the phone or in person at any of our eight locations. CCCS offices are located in Aberdeen, Brookings, Huron, Mitchell, North Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Watertown and Yankton.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) of Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota is a subgrantee to both that National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) and the South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA) which were two of fifty-two grantees from NeighborWorks America to receive funding. For additional information about CCCS, call 330-2700 or 888-258-2227 or email cccs@lsssd.org.
