The Vermillion Red Sox, ranked fifth in the latest rankings of Class "A" amateur baseball teams in South Dakota, open regional tournament play at 2 p.m. Sunday in Mitchell.
The Red Sox finished their regular season with a 2-1 loss to the Sioux Falls Saints. A 1-0 Sox lead, which had held up since the top of the fourth inning, disappeared when the Saints scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth. The tying run scored on a bases-loaded walk, and a single by Josh Meyer won it for the Sioux Falls club.
Garrett Linhardt, who struck out seven, pitched until the sixth inning when Charlie Benz took over. Benz struck out 10 during his stint on the mound.
Richard Swan swatted three basehits and Jon Elliott two among the eight Red Sox hits, and Tyler Candor had a double.
The loss dropped the Vermillion record to 8-6.
