Doris Blanche Olson was born June 22, 1918 in Henning, MN, to Bengt Olof and Martha (Madsen) Johnson, Swedish and Danish immigrants who settled in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. She went to her heavenly home in the early morning hours of Aug. 23, 2011 at the Sanford Care Center in Vermillion.
Funeral service was on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Dalesburg Baptist Church, 30503 466th Ave, Beresford, with Rev. Darren Regehr officiating. Burial was in Dalesburg Baptist Cemetery following the service. Visitation was held on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011 at Kober Funeral Home, Vermillion, from 5 to 7 p.m., with a visitation and video tribute that began at 7 p.m.
Doris met her first husband, Ralph O. Haarsager, in Chicago before WWII and they married on June 6, 1946 in Henning, MN. Together they raised three sons and a daughter. He died in August 1970. She married Eldon A. Olson, who was also a member of Dalesburg Baptist Church, on Sept. 6, 1986 in rural Beresford. Eldon died in January 1999.
Doriss family and faith in her saviour Jesus Christ were central to her life and values. She loved cooking, baking and visiting and excelled at all. When failing eyesight finally forced her to give up driving, she responded, How am I going to visit the old people? After Ralphs death, she worked for many years in the nursing home in which she was eventually a resident, and that work was as much a ministry as an occupation for her.
She is survived by her children, Dennis (Mhairi) Haarsager of Hillsboro, VA, Dudley (Mary) Haarsager of Yankton, Margaret (Gordon) Johnson of rural Centerville, Robert (Mary) Haarsager of Falcon Heights, MN; stepchildren James (Joan) Olson of Vermillion, Judy Robinson of Vermillion and Arlene Olson of Sioux Falls; 21 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands Ralph and Eldon; her parents Bengt Olof and Martha; her brother Rev. Rawlin Johnson; and infant sister Josephine; daughter-in-law Sandra Haarsager; and step-son Ed Olson.
