For the second straight year Carter Andre will be Vermillion's only player in the state Class "A" boys golf tournament, but local fans who stop out at The Bluffs on Monday and Tuesday to cheer for him are likely to see quite a battle for the state championship.
When The Bluffs hosts the state event, the teams that were at the top of the Region 2A tournament on the same course this past Monday may very well be dueling again for even higher stakes. Sioux Falls Christian's deep team of golfers edged Harrisburg, 303-305, for the regional team title with West Central, third at 320 strokes, also qualifying as a team for state.
Another Region 2A team, Dakota Valley, though not qualifying as one of the top three teams, nevertheless qualified four of its golfers so will have a shot at the state championship as well. Joining the four schools from this region will be Dell Rapids, Aberdeen Roncalli and Sisseton from Region 1A; Winner, Parkston and Chamberlain from 3A, and Lead/Deadwood, Spearfish and Hot Springs from Region 4A.
Harrisburg claimed the top two golfers at Monday's regional when Cade McLaughlin and Alex Stern tied with 71s. McLaughlin won medalist honors in a one-hole playoff.
Andre tied for 23rd place to qualify for the state tournament. He had rounds of 44 and 42 for his 86.
Missing the state tournament by the barest of margins a single stroke were two more Tanagers. Mitch Ellison's 46-43 and Pete Haught's 40-49 missed the last qualifying score of 88 by a single shot.
Also playing for Vermillion were Jay Munger, 57-48=105, and Jacob Odens, 54-56=110.
