Students from the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and American Advertising Federation (AAF) Chapters at the University of South Dakota are organizing a tweet drive as part of the 2011 Holiday Tweet Drive sweeping the world. A tweet drive uses the social media vehicle Twitter as a way to inform communities about a local toy drive in the area. In addition to the toy drive, tweet drives have the goal of connecting on-line communities in real-world settings. Large or small, tweet drives allow individuals to come together both on- and off-line to promote social good.
In its second year, the nonprofit Tweet Drive organization is launching toy drives all over the world; international locations include Melbourne and London. Sioux Falls will be just one of at least 33 locations that social media enthusiasts will unite to donate during the holiday season. This global phenomenon has received national coverage through online news outlets such as Mashable. Individuals can take part in the toy drive by following @SoDakTweetDrive and by attending the event.
The tweet drive will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 at K Restaurant in downtown Sioux Falls from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy live entertainment and free appetizers in exchange for donating a new toy, clothing, or a minimum $5 monetary donation; all funds and items will be donated to the Children's Home Society.
