Traffic stop nets 980 pounds of marijuana

A Massachusetts man was arrested on drug charges after a routine traffic stop by the South Dakota Highway Patrol resulted in discovery of 980 pounds of marijuana.

The incident happened on Friday, Jan. 6, on Interstate 90 about 11 miles east of Rapid City. A Highway Patrol trooper stopped Donald McCormick, 40, of Ipswich, MA, for speeding. During the stop a drug dog was deployed and numerous bales of marijuana were discovered under a cover in the back of the 2006 Chevrolet 2500HD pickup.

McCormick was arrested for possession of 980 pounds of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Agents with the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team assisted at the stop.

The investigation remains active, and no further information is available at this time.
