Two Vermillion gymnasts placed within the top 20 in their respective individual events as the state gymnastics meet came to a conclusion Saturday in Brookings.
Junior Jade Fostvedt placed 18th on the balance beam with a 7.683 score, and freshman Jamie Moos finished 19th on the uneven parallel bars with a 7.650 count for the Tanagers' only top-20 places.
In other VHS scores from the individual competition, Moos was the only athlete to compete in all four events. She had 5.350 on the beam, 7.833 in floor exercise and 8.200 in the vault for an all-around score of 29.033.
Fostvedt scored 7.416 in floor exercise; Alexis Reich 7.550 in floor exercise; Anna Hammond 8.016 in vault; Cassie Donahoe 6.566 on beam; Cheyenne Mallory 5.750 on bars and 7.783 in vault; Morgan Hower 7.366 on bars and Rory Tucker 7.250 on beam and 8.400 in floor exercise.
Friday was team competition day at the state meet, and Vermillion finished ninth with a total of 119.177. Deuel High School repeated as state team champion, edging Madison, 145.846 to 141.979.
Moos placed 23rd in the all-around standings that day with a 30.015 composite. In individual events on team competition day, these were the VHS places and scores:
Bars: Moos 21st, 7.683; Hower 22nd, 7.666; Mallory 25th, 7.400; Ellie Glover 39th, 6.050; Hammond 40th, 6.033.

Only Glover and Donahoe will be lost by graduation to the young Tanager team coached by Mark Upward.
