Deryl Wayne Kruse was born on Dec. 5, 1926 to Leo and Lois (Wrede) Kruse in Wessington. He moved with his family to Vermillion in what he called the "dirty 30's." He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and was assigned as Seaman First Class for 2 1/2 years during WWII. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Vermillion and met Lela Christopherson. They were united in marriage on Jan. 7, 1947 and spent 65 cherished years together. They raised sixwonderful children and were blessed with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Deryl enjoyed time with his wife, Lela, spending time with his family, telling jokes, cruising around Vermillion on his scooter, making BBQ ribs, watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities and sports, as well as just having a pure joy for life.
An avid bowler for most of his life, Deryl participated on many leagues and passed his fondness for the sport down to his children and beyond as a favorite family pastime. He loved the outdoors, and could be found fishing on the Missouri River whenever he got the chance. He was also a member of the Black Hills Hunt Club, served on the Vermillion Fire Department for many years, and belonged to VFW Post #3061 and American Legion Post #44, both of Vermillion. It was Deryl's privilege to take part in Honor Flight South Dakota in April of 2010, making the trip to Washington, DC with his son, Tom.
Grateful for having shared in Deryl's life are his wife, Lela Kruse of Vermillion; their six children, Linda (Al) Kruse of Marshall, MN, Nancy Kruse of Soldotna, AK, Mary Jo (Bill) Ralph of Austin, TX, Carol Kruse of Vermillion, Tom (Carlotta) Kruse of Vermillion, and Mike (Laurie) Kruse of Vermillion; grandchildren, Jay (Stacey) Yates and sons, Zach and Caden, Seth Ralph and son, Shawn, Michael (Beth) Kruse and children, Emma and Michael, Matthew Kruse and son, Conner, Megan (Kevin) Kalil and Shawn Kruse; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Ashmore of Elk Point, and Betty Hansen of Vermillion; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
