Vermillion's tennis Tanagers opened their 2012 season with a split of two matches in a triangular at Yankton Saturday, playing in midsummer-like 80-degree conditions.
The Tanagers, coached this spring by Betsy Hughes, defeated Sioux City North, 6-3, and lost to Yankton, 7-2, to gain their split.
Singles players James May, Nathan Samudzi, Mark Helenurm and Jacob Ford and the doubles teams of Helenurm/Will Card and Samudzi/Ford all scored victories in the win over North. Vermillion's points in the Yankton dual were posted by Samudzi in singles and the Samudzi/Ford doubles team.
Next week the Tanagers play at Brandon Valley in a 4 p.m. match Tuesday.
