Tanager tennis opens season with split of two matches

Vermillion's tennis Tanagers opened their 2012 season with a split of two matches in a triangular at Yankton Saturday, playing in midsummer-like 80-degree conditions.

The Tanagers, coached this spring by Betsy Hughes, defeated Sioux City North, 6-3, and lost to Yankton, 7-2, to gain their split.

Singles players James May, Nathan Samudzi, Mark Helenurm and Jacob Ford and the doubles teams of Helenurm/Will Card and Samudzi/Ford all scored victories in the win over North.  Vermillion's points in the Yankton dual were posted by Samudzi in singles and the Samudzi/Ford doubles team.

Next week the Tanagers play at Brandon Valley in a 4 p.m. match Tuesday.

2. May lost to Sorenson, 10-6.

3. Samudzi def. Jones, 10-6.

4. Helenurm lost to Jensen, 10-6.

5. Card lost to Frick, 10-8.

6. Ford lost to Fanta, 10-2.

Doubles::

1. May/Day lost to Rockne/Sorenson, 10-2.

2. Helenurm/Card lost to Jensen/Frick, 10-7.

3. Samudzi/Ford def. Fanta/Fanta, 10-5.
