Vermillion's second graders took time Monday to help the Vermillion Parks Department plant a new tree in Prentis Park in celebration of Arbor Day and to celebrate the life of Darrel Christopherson. Darrel, a veteran, and survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, passed away earlier this year. At the end of WWII, he returned to Vermillion where he served as a city police officer. After his retirement, he often visited local schools to talk about Americanism, his experiences in the Navy, and proper flag etiquette. On hand to witness the planting of the Autumn Blaze Pear tree in the park were Darrel's widow, Bea, his son, Rick, his granddaughter, Kourtney Christopherson, and Rick's girlfriend, Jan Kohen.
