Laura Lou Marsh, age 88 of Hartington, NE, died on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Hartington.
Funeral services were on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hartington with Rev. Gary Kimm and Rev. Bernard Sayler officiating. Burial was in the Hartington City Cemetery. Visitation was on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Prayer Service, including a PEO Service, at 7 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation began one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.
Pallbearers were her eight grandsons and one granddaughter, Paul, Scott, David, Chris, Craig, Michael, Ryan, Tammi and Zach Marsh. Honorary pallbearers were the residents and staff of Golden Living.
Laura Lou was born the only child of A. Virgil and Blula (Engman) McDonald on July 18, 1923 at the family farm located on Spirit Mound, seven miles north of Vermillion. She attended Spirit Mound School District 15 through eighth grade, graduated from Vermillion High School in 1941 and the University of South Dakota in 1945 receiving a Bachelors of Science in Education. Laura Lou taught at Hartington Public School until her marriage on June 25, 1947 to Dean Marsh at a ceremony in Vermillion. They made their home on a farm southwest of Hartington where she lived until moving to the Golden Living Community in April of 2009. After years at home raising her boys, she returned to teaching at Hartington Public. She taught Social Studies and History, and coached speech. She retired in 1989 after 21 years of teaching at Hartington Public School. She continued to be a regular guest for many years when students studied Nebraska History.
Laura Lou was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hartington, NE, serving on the Board of Trustees and member of the Women's Circle. She was an active charter member of the Hartington HZ Chapter of PEO for the past 30 years, and served on the Board of the Friends of the Library.
Laura Lou and Dean enjoyed many years of parading with the Abu Becker Cornhusker Shrine Club and bowling mixed league in Hartington. She enjoyed Friday Night Group, refinishing antique furniture, embroidering quilts, playing scrabble, completing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Visits and pictures from her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her great pride and joy.
Laura Lou is survived by two sons, Steve (Joanne) and Tom (Lea) of Hartington and daughter in law, Carolyn Marsh of Omaha, NE; and nine grandchildren, Paul (Jessica) Marsh of Lincoln, NE, Scott (Erin) Marsh of Independence, MO, David Marsh of Lincoln, NE, Chris (Kassy) Marsh of Hartington, NE, Craig (Heidi) Marsh of Crofton, NE, Michael Marsh of Omaha, NE, Ryan (Megan) Marsh of Hartington, Tammi Marsh of Lincoln, NE and Zach Marsh of Hartington, NE. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
Laura Lou was preceded in death by her parents; son Tim on April 1, 1987 at the age of 34; and husband, Dean, on May 24, 1993 at the age of 69.
