VHS tennis scores 4 points at state tourney

A pair of singles wins, one by Jacob Ford and the other by Andrew Callahan, accounted for Vermillion's four team points at the state tennis tournament in Rapid City last weekend.

Ford, the Tanagers' entry in Flight 4 singles, won a 10-1 consolation-round match, and Callahan in Flight 6 singles won his opening-round match 6-1, 6-4.

Sioux Falls Washington won the team championship.

 • No. 1 singles:  David Day lost to Tieszen, Washington, 6-0, 6-0; lost to Waletich, Mitchell, 10-3.

  • No. 2 singles:  Joe Swanson lost to Crompton, Aberdeen Central, 6-2, 6-1; lost to Blue, Brandon Valley, 10-0.
  • No. 3 singles:  Mark Helenurm lost to Chilom, Brookings, 6-0, 6-4; lost to Hepper, Milbank, 10-5.
  • No. 4 singles:  Jacob Ford lost to Zimmerman, Aberdeen Central, 6-1, 6-0; def. Zvorak, Spearfish, 10-1; lost to Jensen, Yankton, 10-4.
  • No. 5 singles:  Will Card lost to Haffeman, Washington, 6-1, 6-0; lost to Manson, Brookings, 10-6.
  • No. 6 singles:  Andrew Callahan def. Hersch, Spearfish, 6-1, 6-4; lost to Case, Pierre, 6-0, 6-0; lost to Wever, Huron, 10-1.
  • No. 1 doubles:  Day/Ford lost to Meinke/Menke, Roosevelt, 6-1, 6-1; lost to Waletich/Kurtz, Milbank, 10-1.
  • No. 2 doubles:  Helenurm/Card lost to Jensen/Frick, Yankton, 6-1, 6-4; lost to Dobbs/Noldner, Lincoln, 10-2.
  • No. 3 doubles:  Swanson/Callahan lost to Reyner/Barton, Roncalli, 6-3, 6-0; lost to Patrasko/Heckman, O'Gorman, 10-0.
