FRIDAY, JUNE 1

  • Hospital Auxiliary Meeting at Sanford Vermillion Board Room, 20 S. Plum, Administrative entrance just south of hospital entrance.

Saturday, JUNE 2

  • Annual "Attic Treasures" rummage sale at the Austin-Whittemore House, 8 a.m.-noon. Sponsored by the Clay County Historical Society. Bring donated items to the AW House during the week. Clothing or furniture cannot be accepted.
  • Vermillion Area Farmers Market from 9 a.m.-noon, downtown Vermillion at the Platz Market and Main St.
  • Overeaters Anonymous at 9 a.m. Sanford Vermillion Medical Center, 20 S. Plum St., administration entrance just south of the hospital entrance in the board room.
  • Heartland Humane Society open house to meet dogs available for adoption from 10 a.m.-noon at Advance America in Yankton located behind McDonalds and next to Steckler Eye on west 23rd St. Steckler Eye will be hosting a food, litter and leash drive for the shelter during the month of June. Adoption applications available at www.heartlandhumanesociety.net or call (605) 664-4244 prior to event.
  • Nebraska Rod & Custom Association will be bringing their car show to Vermillion. There will be approximately 300 cars at the DakotaDome parking lot from noon-2 p.m. before they continue on their travels. Cookout lunch (burger/hot dog, chips, potato salad, cookie, beverage) will be available for purchase, so plan to come out and enjoy lunch and view the classic cars!
  • Celebrate Rhubarb Day will be held at the W.H. Over Museum from 2-3:30 p.m. Taste good rhubarb concoctions and take part in some fun activities. Free-will donation requested.
  • Gayville Hall presents "The Hay Country Jamboree," at 8 p.m. at Gayville, SD, 502 Washington St. For ticket information, call 605-267-2859.
  • Bikes & Babes Rally 4 Miracles: A motorcycle-themed event for the entire family at 10 a.m. Registration from 9-9:45 a.m. at Vermillion Wal-Mart. Cost: 425 End location: J&L Harley Davidson, Sioux Falls. Proceeds from event will be donated to the Children's Miracle Network. Planning Ahead:

  • JUNE 8-10 — First annual Shakespeare Festival in Prentis Park, Vermillion. Event sponsored by Coyoteopoly and is free and open to the public.
  • JUNE 9 — Vermillion Area Farmer's Market, 9 a.m.-noon, downtown Vermillion at the Platz, Market & Main St.

  • JUNE 9 — Westreville Festival Fun Run and Cemetery Walk, 9 a.m. at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church, rural Vermillion. Event website: westrevillefestival.wordpress.com Admission fee is $10 includes T-shirt. This non-competitive Fun Run has events for the whole family. Choose to run, bike or walk a 2, 4, or 6 mile course of mostly county gravel roads past historic barns, beautiful rolling hills and farm fields. Women of Pleasant Valley will serve coffee & pie at 10 a.m. The Cemetery Walk will go to Pleasant Valley Cemetery, about a 1-mile round trip walk and to historic Mortvedt Cemetery, about a 3-mile round trip walk. There will be farm-oriented kids activities beginning at 10:15 a.m. This event will fund the Eckert Children Scholarship fund to help an outstanding Irene-Wakonda senior and will also go toward a historical marker for the old town of Westreville.   • JUNE 9 — 2012 H-WORTH OPEN to be held in memory of Matthew Hollingsworth at the Bluffs Golf Course. Shotgun start to begin at 1 p.m. All proceeds will go to the Clay County EMS Department. This is a four-person scramble that includes 18 holes of golf, catered BBQ and prizes. Sign up by contacting the Bluffs club house at 677-7058.
  • JUNE 9 — As You Like Shakespeare!: The USD College of Arts & Sciences Scholar's Roundtable, in conjunction with the first annual S.D. Shakespeare Festival (www.sdshakespearefestival.org) features three exciting scholars, Lois Potter, University of Delaware; Peter Kanelos, Loyola University; and Darlene Farabee, USD at 3 p.m. in Farber Hall located in Old Main on USD campus.
  • JUNE 11-14 — Star Wars! Summer Discovery Series Workshop for students entering 1st-3rd grades, from 10-11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m. $10 for all four sessions! Location: National Music Museum.
  • JUNE 15 — Swedish Music in Vermillion: Hear two of Sweden's finest folk musicians, Anders and Maria Larsson, at Washington Street Arts Center in Vermillion. The public is cordially invited to attend a workshop on traditional Swedish music and dancing at 5:30 p.m. and a Swedish potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a concert at 7:30 p.m. The melodies of Maria's fiddle and traditional wooden flutes join her husband Anders' traditional lilting, vocals and guitar in a musical marriage. The result of their playful improvisation is an organic, living style of Swedish music. The event is sponsored by Vermillion Area Arts Council. A $5 donation to the VAAC is requested.
