Inga Collar

Inga L. Collar, 93, of Vermillion, went to be with the Lord on June 1, 2012 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Newell, IA.


Inga Louise Peterson was born Nov. 12, 1918 in Menno, the daughter of Bernhard and Durdei (Iverson) Peterson. She attended school in Yankton.

She was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Irene. She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church attending in Yankton, Vermillion, and Gayville. She enjoyed many years of singing in the choir. She was a member of the "Just-2-B" club in Vermillion and belonged to the Eagles Auxiliary.

Inga was united in marriage June 29, 1936 to Thomas Allen Brownie at Bethlehem Parsonage, Irene from this union came three boys, Leslie, Benny and Thomas.

On Oct. 17, 1945, she married Nicholas F. DeRoos at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton and Nick adopted the three boys in 1946 and they raised them together. They lived in Yankton, Ballclub, MN, Elk Point, Vermillion, and Gayville.

She married Virgil K. Collar September 5, 1975 at Gayville Lutheran Church and moved to Elk Point. Upon Virgil's passing on Jan. 7, 1999, she moved to an apartment in Vermillion where she resided until moving to Wel-Life Assisted Living in Alta, IA in Oct. 1, 2007 to be closer to her oldest son. On May 15, 2008, she moved to Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Newell, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernhard and Durdei Peterson; her three husbands, Tom, Nick and Virgil; her son, Leslie; step-son, Ronald DeRoos; as well as three of her siblings, Dorothy (Harold) Young, Josephine (Lloyd) Sorensen and Edward (Cleo) Petersen.

She will lovingly be remembered by those left to cherish her memory including her sons, Benny (Norma) DeRoos of Kennewick, WA, Thomas (Karen) DeRoos of Dakota City, NE; daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Leslie) DeRoos, of Alta, IA; step-daughter, Lorraine (Darell) Duke; grandchildren, Leslie (Catherine) DeRoos Jr.,of Alta, IA, Lee (Gina) DeRoos, of McCook Lake, Nick (Carla) DeRoos, of Sioux City, IA; Douglas (Mary) DeRoos of Sioux City, IA, Louis (Sherry) DeRoos, of Aurelia, IA, Lynann (Raegan) Landerville, of Alta, IA, Robin (Chris) Dyer of Kennewick, WA, Jeffrey (Vicki) DeRoos of Kennewick, WA, Kathleen (Patrick) Skadorwa of Kennewick, WA, James (Diana) DeRoos, Kennewick, WA, Greg (Tracey) DeRoos of Pasco, WA, Tammy (Tom) Hendrickson of South Sioux City, NE, Thomas (Jennifer) DeRoos;, Jodi (Derek ) DeRoos Horalek, Lincoln, NE; sisters,  Emma Peterson, Gertrude Fassio and Stella Hanson; 40 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Gayville Lutheran Church in Gayville, with Rev. Ralph Egbert officiating. Burial was in Gayville Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
