South Dakotans again showed what great community spirit they have! On Saturday, June 23, several businesses in Vermillion opened their doors and set up tables for the Taste & Tour fundraiser, to support the Heartland Humane Society.
The event raised more than $4,500 for veterinary care and shelter costs for homeless dogs and cats in Vermillion, Yankton, and nearby areas. What made the event so special was the "win-win" thinking of the business community – their donated time and resources not only help abandoned pets but also attract new customers to the businesses.
Saturday's event came on the heels of another successful partnership, the South Dakota Shakespeare Festival, held earlier in June. We applaud this smart, long-range thinking for community and economic development, and look forward to many more public/private/non-profit partnerships.
A list of the businesses and other sponsors of Taste & Tour may be found on the Heartland Humane Society website at: http://www.heartlandhumanesociety.net/events.html.
