A Minnesota man won the South Dakota Kayak Challenge on the Missouri River over the holiday weekend. Joe Zellner of Grand Marais, MN, finished the 72-mile course between Yankton and Sioux City, IA, in less than nine hours. That was about an hour faster than the time of the 2010 winner. The race was canceled last year because of Missouri River flooding. This year's race drew 170 kayakers. It started Saturday morning. Some kayakers didn't finish the course until Sunday morning. Pictured are a pair of kayakers paddling their way under the Newcastle-Vermillion Bridge early Saturday afternoon.
