Mildred C. O'Connor, age 93, of Pocahontas, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Pocahontas Manor, surrounded by her loving family.
Mildred Catherine Kribell was born June 19, 1919, at Beresford, SD, to Lew and Katherine (Neuroth) Kribell. Mildred was raised on a farm south of Beresford, SD and attended Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Emmett, SD. Mildred graduated from Mount Marty High School, Yankton, SD. On October 1, 1940, she married John Allen O'Connor. They made their home on a farm north of Vermillion, SD in the Garryowen community. They raised five children on their farm before moving to Akron, IA in 1961, and to Sioux City, IA. in 1962.
Mildred was employed at St. Vincent Hospital (Mercy Medical Center) Physical Therapy Dept. for almost twenty years. Upon her retirement in 1981, she moved to California. Her love for helping others brought her out of retirement and back to work in the Physical Therapy Dept. at Riverside Medical Center where she worked another ten years before retiring at the age of 74. Mildred lived in California for 25 years before moving back to Iowa to be with family.
Mildred instilled in her children love of God, love of family, compassion, generosity, honesty and hard work. She loved working with her roses and flowers and enjoyed watching the beauty of God through His gift of nature. She had a passion for music and dance. Her love of music began in her youth when she sang in the church choir. She played the saxophone, clarinet, guitar and harmonica. But her most precious treasures were her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grand-daughters.
Survivors include her children, Elaine O'Connor, Pocahontas, Kathleen (Cal) Hendrie, Pocahontas, James (Janette) O'Connor, Lakeville, MN, and JoAnne (Bill) Booge, Palmer, IA; seven grandchildren; Irene (Andy) Josey of Windsor, CO; Chris (Stacy) Donnell of Aurora, CO; Kim (Don) White of Lakeville, MN; Jerry (Debra) Monroe of Brea, CA; Mike (Anna) Monroe of Brea, CA; Ryan (Vanessa) Blair of Bennington, NE; and Jason (Molly) O'Connor of Minneapolis, MN; ten great-grandchildren; Jennifer (Jeremy) Josey in Colorado; Rick (Brandy) Tremblay in Colorado; Mandy, Ian, and Andrew Hendrie in California; Janaye and Donte White in Minnesota; Calvin and Carter Blair in Nebraska and Skyler Bergin in Des Moines; two great great-grand-daughters; sisters Dolores Valsvig of Long Beach, CA; Anne (Jerry) Harrington of Pantego, TX; and brother Lewie (Gloria) Kribell of Alcester, SD; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Lew and Katherine Kribell, John Allen O'Connor, her daughter, Marguerite Monroe, three brothers, Larry, Dan and James Kribell, sisters Lucille O'Connor, Monica Lyle and Therese Jennings and grandson, Shawn M. Blair.
Memorial Mass will be at 10:30am, Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Iowa with Fr. Paul Bormann officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas, Iowa is handling the arrangements.
