C-Hawks rout Tanagers 37-0

An ugly 11-minute stretch in the third quarter during which Canton scored 31 points turned a close Vermillion High homecoming game into a rout at the DakotaDome Friday night as the C-Hawks secured their first win of the season, 37-0.

The Tanagers will try again tonight (Friday) to capture their elusive initial victory when they go to Lennox for a 7 p.m. kickoff.  There waiting for them will be the Orioles (0-3), whose early-season schedule has been just as difficult as Vermillion's.  Lennox has lost to Tea Area 41-0, to Harrisburg 40-7 and to Dakota Valley 47-12.

"This is always a tough conference battle," said Coach Gary Culver, "and I would expect it to be the same this Friday."

The Tanagers gained 54 yards on the ground against Canton but also lost 32 the same way, so the net rushing total was only 22 yards.  Along with 16 passing yards, the Tanagers were held to 38 total yards compared to Canton's 350, every one of them on the ground.

It was a game for awhile.  The Tanagers punted on their first possession and were stymied by a big loss on a screen pass attempt on their second possession.  To start the second quarter Tanner Anderson's circus catch resulted in a gain of 35 yards and moved VHS to midfield, but a holding penalty crippled that drive.

When Nick Jensen burst through the line on Canton's fourth-and-one-foot attempt at a first down, the Tanagers had the ball at the Canton 47.  Avery Garcia gained 11 yards in two carries, and Tyler Madsen moved the down marker two more yards to the Canton 35.  But then a sack lost yardage, and the drive stalled.

That's when the C-Hawks finally made their move.  Quarterback Cody Majeres completed a hurried drive with a 25-yard run to paydirt with a minute left in the first half to install momentum squarely on Canton's side.  The halftime intermission only delayed what was to follow – four more touchdowns by Majeres on runs of 35, one, 84 and 15 yards and a one-yard plunge by Tanner Broughton.

It wasn't till 3:45 remained in the fourth period that the Tanagers were able to move to their first first down of the half on Jack Brown's plunge for four yards.

"I really thought we could receive the second-half kickoff and put together a good drive for the go-ahead score," Culver said,  "Instead, what we got was five turnovers, a mishandled kickoff and five Canton touchdowns that settled the game in about a 10-minute span.  I'm not sure I can remember a quarter of football like that in all my years of coaching."

Alex Osborne led the Tanager defensive effort with nine tackles, Garcia had eight, Michael Sand seven and Jensen six.  Garcia was the leading ground-gainer for VHS with 23 yards in six carries.

Majeres rushed for 236 yards all by himself, carrying the mail 15 times.  Gabe Dolen added 67 yards in 11 attempts for the C-Hawks.
