Des Moines, IA—Eight members of South Dakota's tennis team combined to win 15 matches at the Drake Fall Invitational held at Roger Knapp Tennis Center Friday through Sunday. It was the second of four events the Coyotes are scheduled to compete in this fall.
Eight Division I teams competed at the Invitational which included six flights of singles play and three flights of doubles play. The host Bulldogs won four of the six singles flights and swept the doubles titles.
"I was happy to see our team compete hard in a tough tournament," said USD coach Malcolm Gilreath. "The fall season provides us a great opportunity to work on things and improve. We are looking forward to next weekend's Kansas Invitational."
Coyote first-year Maria Tortosa Benabeu and junior Maddy Warder earned three wins each for the Coyotes. Both advanced to the consolation finals of their singles flights. Tortosa Benabeu then teamed with Veronika Makashov to advance to the semifinal round of "C" doubles flight. Tortosa Benabeu and Makashov improved to 3-1 as a doubles tandem this fall.
