DORIS OLSON Doris Lorene Olson, 83,of Burbank, passed into eternal peace on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
Doris was born April 5, 1929, the oldest of 10 siblings, to Alexander and Bertha (Kost) Ernst, at Menno. In 1944, the Ernst family moved to Vermillion where Doris worked at the Chimes Café while attending Vermillion High School.
Also attending VHS, and a frequent visitor to the "Chimes," was Cecil W. Olson of Burbank. After a loving courtship, the two were united in marriage on Aug. 15, 1949 in Fairview.
Into this union four children were born. The Olson family made their home on a farm between Vermillion and Burbank, where Cecil farmed until his death in 1976 and Doris took care of the home and the children. Up to that point they were nearly inseparable.
After losing her husband, Doris became active in many social activities including the Eagles Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Burbank Just-To-Be Club, Bald Eagles CB Club, bingo, cards, coffees, Senior Center, and, of course, her church, Trinity Lutheran, where she was a member of the Rachael Circle.
After suffering a stroke in February 2009, and Alzheimer's disease, Doris moved off of the farm and resided at nursing care facilities until her death.
Immediate family survivors include son, Tom Olson of Springfield; daughter, Sue (Dave) Winckler of Vermillion; granddaughters, Jessica (Doug) Sanders of Tyndall, Amanda Winckler and partner Jeremy GoBell of Sioux Falls, Sandi and Sadie Winckler, both of Vermillion; great-grandchildren, Veronica, Desirae, and Grace Sanders; Devin, Owen, and Ethan GoBell; and Kingson Fabian; sisters, Kathlene (Byron) Norval of Seward, NE, Florence Sedor of Lincoln, NE, Darlene (Robb) Hegr of Sturgis, Norma (Edmond) Ouellette of Vermillion, and Karen (Tim) Cope of Gainesville, VA; and brothers, Howard (Sandra) Ernst of Columbus, NE, and Will (Patti) Ernst of Boynton Beach, FL; sister-in-law, Barb Ernst of Vermillion.
Immediate family predeceasing Doris were her parents, Alex and Bertha Ernst; husband, Cecil Olson; daughter, Linda Verros; son, Wayne Olson; sister, Eldora Pickett; and brother, Gerald (Jerry) Ernst.
Services were held at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion on Tuesday, Sept. 11, with burial immediately following in BluffView Cemetery. Visitation and a prayer service were held on Monday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Kober Funeral Home in Vermillion.
