South Dakota's women's cross country team is ranked 15th in the Midwest Region Poll released by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross County Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday morning.
It is the first time the women have been ranked in the poll at the Division I level. They are the second Summit League team ranked in that poll behind North Dakota State at 12th.
"We're excited about our team getting recognized for this achievement in our first year of full Division I status," South Dakota cross country coach Dan Fitzsimmons said. "Hopefully this is something our program can build off of."
The ranking comes off a second place finish for the Coyotes at the Woody Greeno Invitational last weekend. South Dakota topped Nebraska, Kansas State, Creighton and Omaha at the meet.
Earlier this season, they won the Creighton/Omaha Classic by placing four in the top-five and sweeping all three duals against Nebraska, Creighton and Omaha.
The USTFCCCA has nine regional polls and a national poll. The Midwest Region has 38 schools, and includes schools from the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.
