Joseph Oakie Sr.
Joseph Carl Oakie Sr., 65, of Vermillion, passed away on, Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls.
A visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Native American prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at the Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion.
A committal service took place in the Oakie-Chasing Hawk Cemetery in Red Scaffold.
Joseph was born on Nov. 7, 1946, in Eagle Butte, to Herman and Mary (Chasing Hawk) Oakie. After leaving Eagle Butte, Joseph served in the U.S. Navy. After his time in the military, Joseph moved to Vermillion, where he was a resident for more than 30 years.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Kathy (Begay) Oakie; his daughter, Zonnie Oakie; his sons, Ronnie Oakie Sr., Cecil Oakie, and Joseph Oakie Jr.; his granddaughter, Cheyenne Oakie; and his grandsons, Brandon Blackbear, and Ronnie Oakie Jr., all of Vermillion.
He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Oakie; his parents, Herman and Mary Oakie; his sisters, Mary Oakie and Lynda Whitewolf; his brother, Stuart Oakie; and his grandson, Stuart Nezzie.
Services were entrusted to Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion.
