Richard E. Bottolfson, 79, of Vermillion, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at Sanford Hospital in Vermillion.
Visitation was held on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, from 6 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion.
Funeral service was held on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at 1:30 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with Pastor Trisha Boese.
Burial took place immediately following the service in BluffView Cemetery in Vermillion.
Richard was born on Aug. 19, 1933, in Vermillion, to Elmer and Esther (Kilness) Bottolfson. He graduated from Vermillion High School in 1951. Richard went on to attend the University of South Dakota, where he earned his Business Degree and graduated in 1955.
On March 16, 1958, Richard married the love of his life, Darlene Davis. They raised two sons, Jay and Mark. Richard taught his boys everything he knew. The three of them, along with Richard's grandchildren, worked together to sustain the farming legacy he started. Richard had a passion for traveling, farming, socializing and learning.
Richard served eight years in the Army National Guard. He also spent many dedicated years serving various organizations such as Trinity Lutheran Church, Clay County Park Association, Bluff View Cemetery, Evergreen Cemetery, Norway Township Board, American Legion Auxiliary, Eagles Club, the Director of Farm Mutual Insurance, Vermillion School Board and the 4-H Foundation.
Richard is survived by his wife, Darlene; his sons, Jay (Kirstina) Bottolfson, and Mark (Beth) Bottolfson; his brothers, Leonard (Mary) Bottolfson, Gary (Mary) Bottolfson, all of Vermillion, and Larry (Nita) Bottolfson of Gilbert, AZ; his sisters, Julie (David) Nelson of Ruthven, IA, and Beverly Bottolfson of Vermillion; and his grandchildren, Stacy (Kyle) Hubert, Megan Bottolfson, Breanna Bottolfson, and Blaine Bottolfson, all of Vermillion.
He is preceded in death by his grandson, Jason Bottolfson; his sister, Lois Kryger; his brother, Russell Bottolfson; and his parents, Elmer and Esther (Kilness) Bottolfson.
Services were entrusted to Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion.
