After hosting Tea Area and West Central for a triangular last night (Thursday), Vermillion High's wrestlers have the weekend off but are bracing themselves for some serious competition just ahead.
The Tanagers will be at Sioux Falls Lincoln's invitational Dec. 21-22, then at tournaments at Brandon Valley and Harrisburg on the first two weekends in January.
Vermillion scored a dual triumph over Tea Area, 48-21, last week. In another match on the same night Madison defeated the Tanagers by a 54-24 margin.
Against the Titans seven matches were forfeits, four in Vermillion's favor, and the 220-pound weight class was open, so only six weights were actually wrestled. Jacob Husby won by pin at 106, Brett Culver won by decision at 113, Brandon Hertz scored a pin win at 160, Alex Osborne won by decision at 170, and Noah Westergaard won by pin at 195. Carter Kratz lost by decision at 132.
In the Madison dual the Tanagers got pin victories from Jacob Husby at 106, Mason Pickett at 120, Kratz at 132 and Brett Bye at 145. Hertz and Westergaard lost by pins, Regan Bye dropped a tough 4-3 decision at 152, and Hertz lost by pin at 160. Vermillion forfeited five weight classes, and Madison forfeited to Seth Heine at 182.
In the Yankton team dual tournament Saturday the Tanagers found themselves on the short end of all four of their matches, losing to Canton, Yankton, Brandon Valley and West Central. Canton swept the tournament as champion with a perfect 4-0 record.
