UPDATE: Icy interstate factor in three fatalities Tuesday

Three people were killed Tuesday in separate accidents that occurred near Vermillion Tuesday, Dec. 18, due to icy conditions.

An Iowa woman died in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 about 12 miles south of Beresford on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

Tonya Marie Anderson, 38, of Akron, IA, was driving north in a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado when the vehicle went out of control. The roadway was slippery from freezing drizzle. The vehicle entered the median and rolled. Anderson, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle and received fatal injuries.

No further information is immediately available.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Union County Sheriff's Office assisted.

An Emery woman died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 about a mile south of Elk Point on Tuesday.

Angela Beth Snoozy, 27, was driving a 2006 Chrysler 300 M northbound when her vehicle went out of control and crossed the median into the southbound lane. It struck a 2006 Peterbilt garbage truck driven by Loren Harold Fischer, 49, of Vermillion. The roadway was slippery from freezing drizzle in the area.

Snoozy, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from her vehicle and received fatal injuries. Fischer was wearing a seatbelt. He was uninjured.

A secondary, non-injury crash occurred when a third vehicle struck the engine assembly of the Chrysler, which had been dislodged in the crash with the truck.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Union County Sheriff's Office, Elk Point Police Department, Elk Point Fire/Emergency Medical Service, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and South Dakota Department of Transportation assisted.

A Garretson man died of injuries received in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 29 just north of the Vermillion exit on Tuesday, Dec. 18.

Justin Charles Wehde, 27, was a passenger in a 2010 Ford E35 armored van being driven northbound by Andrea Martin Jacobson, 33, of Sioux Falls. The van went out of control on the icy roadway, entered the median and rolled across the southbound lanes into the west ditch.

Jacobson was wearing a seatbelt. She suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Wehde was taken to a Sioux City, Iowa, hospital, where he died later from injuries received in the crash.

Matthew Charles Thompson, 26, of Sioux Falls, was riding in the vault of the van. He was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled and received serious but non-life threatening injuries. Thompson and Jacobson were taken to a Vermillion hospital.

Currency in the armored van was taken to the Union County Sheriff's Office and turned over to representatives from the company.
