Betty Jean Jensen

Betty Jean (Johnson) Jensen, 84, of Vermillion, passed away on Jan. 26, 2013, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Visitation was held from 6 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Both services will be officiated by Rev. Anna Peck.

Burial will take place at a later date.

Betty was born at home on Jan. 6, 1929, to Dalber and Mildred (Stalheim) Johnson. She was the oldest of four children. She attended Spring Hill Country School and graduated from Meckling High School in 1947. Betty was a surrogate mother to her siblings and many nephews.

Betty married Norman Jensen on Aug. 29, 1949, at home in Meckling. To this union Karen (Jensen) Velasquez was born on Sept. 29, 1950.

She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide. She was a long time member of the Hillside Extension Club, a charter member of Eagles Auxiliary and the Bluff View Birthday Club.

Betty was a wonderful cook and many meals were shared with grateful hired men and the fraternity where she worked.

Her many interests included playing Bridge, camping with the Clay County Ramblers Club, and her huge bell collection. She continued to do as much as she could until Rheumatoid Arthritis prevented her from these activities.

Betty is survived by her husband of 63 years, Norman; her daughter, Karen (Michael) Velasquez of Seattle, WA; her brother, Daryl (Arlis) Johnson of Vermillion; her sister, Marlene (Richard) Trudeau of Mitchell; her brother-in-law, Joe Reedy of Bremerton, WA; and many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dalber and Mildred (Stalheim) Johnson; and her sister, Beverly Reedy.

Services have been entrusted to Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion.
