Residents at Sanford Care Center Vermillion were delighted to enjoy a Sweetheart Supper with their valentine last week. Thanks to the coordination and planning by Julie Rolfes, activities coordinator, Barb Kingsbury, nutrition services manager and their staff, a very special Valentine’s dinner was planned for those

residents with a spouse or significant other able to join them.

“Nights like this are one of the highlights of my job. Being able to bless these wonderful couples with a special meal together was a real treat for me too,” said Julie Rolfes, activities coordinator.

The cafeteria at Sanford Vermillion was transformed into a lovely, intimate dining space with a special ambiance for all to enjoy. Fourteen couples gathered for the beautifully served four-course meal complete with a choice of coffee, tea or wine. The meal included shrimp cocktail, a lovely salad and New York Strip steak with red wine sauce accompanied by potatoes gratin. They concluded the evening with red velvet cupcakes for dessert.

“The room looked beautiful, the food was delicious and the service super. It truly made this Valentine’s Day special,” said Bill Willroth, care center resident and wife Joann in a thank you note sent to all the staff involved.

“Joyce and I used to go out for a steak dinner every Valentine’s Day. We haven’t been able to do something like this in 10 years,” said Floyd Gross, whose wife Joyce resides at the Care Center.

“My staff all worked together to make this a truly special evening. Each one of us felt so fortunate to help recreate something for these couples that isn’t always possible at this stage in their lives,” said Barb Kingsbury. “Of the many meals and events we are involved in, thishas certainly been my favorite by far.”

To top off the Valentine’s holiday for all the residents, the care center also held a Valentine’s Party for everyone on Feb. 14. Valentine “mailboxes” were hung outside

each resident’s door for the month of February. Each resident had fun opening their valentines from staff and family members. The highlight of the party was crowning this year’s Valentine’s Royalty. Residents, staff and family members had been placing their ballots in the box for several weeks – all leading up to the crowning of Bill Willroth and Marilyn Bennett – Valentine’s Royalty 2013!
