Vermillion’s Special Olympics basketball team warmed up for this weekend’s state tournament in Yankton with three games in the regional tournament on Feb. 24.
The state meet will be played Friday and Saturday. Members of the 2012-13 Vermillion S.O. team are Jon Manning, Kathie Herrerra, Sharrie Stammer, Shaylene Davis, Dillion Huddelson, Robbie Cheeseman-Johnson, James Solberg, Austin Ahmed and Jordyn Hahn.
In the regional opener Vermillion lost to Canton, which would go through the meet undefeated, by a 22-10 score. Herrerra and Manning scored four points each with Huddelson adding two points.
VSO defeated the Sioux Falls United Mustangs, 12-6, in the day’s second game. Herrerra led the team with eight points, and Manning and Cheeseman-Johnson contributed two points each.
Vermillion beat Brookings III, 26-14, in the day’s final contest. Manning led all scorers with 10 points, Herrerra added six, and Stammer and Cheeseman-Johnson had four each.
A highlight of the day occurred in the Brookings game when Vermillion’s James Solberg scored his first basket ever in Special Olympics play. Ahmed participated in the skills portion of the tournament.
A Special Olympics fundraiser will be this year’s Polar Plunge on April 14. Everyone is invited to take the plunge by raising $100 or more to support Special Olympics in Vermillion.
