Buell breaks USD pole vault record, wins at Texas Relays

University of South Dakota pole vaulter Bethany Buell set a new career-best and USD outdoor record of 14 feet, 7 inches while winning section A of the women’s pole vault on Friday night at the Texas Relays. The mark is the best height in the nation so far this season.

Buell became the first Coyote to win at the Texas Relays and broke the previous USD record of 14-5½ she set last season. She’s also the second Coyote to break a record at the relays. Jeff Mettler set a new record while finishing third in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase on Thursday night with a time of 8 minutes, 54.40 seconds, breaking the old record of 8:58.95.

Two other Coyotes placed in the top-ten in the pole vault. Emily Grove was seventh with a mark of 13-9¾, and Madison Mills was eighth with a mark of 13-3¾.

South Dakota also had two place in the top-five in section B of the men’s shot put. Kyle McKelvey placed third with a toss of 55-4¾ while Cody Snyder was fourth with a throw of 55-1½.

South Dakota will finish competition at the Texas Relays and will have a group compete at the Razorback Spring Invitational in Fayetteville, AR, on Saturday.
