From the top of their lineup to the bottom, the Vermillion girls’ golf team had its best all-around showing of the season Monday, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
The Tanagers placed a strong second among nine teams at the Region 2A meet at Hartford, securing a spot as a full team at the state tournament in Milbank next Monday and Tuesday.
Vermillion’s individual scores, however, were all low enough that all five Tanager golfers would have qualified as individuals anyway.
Joining VHS as teams at the state meet will be region champion Sioux Falls Christian, which had a 340 team score Tuesday, and third-place West Central, 388. The Tanagers’ score was 354. The top three teams and the best 26 individuals earned spots in the state tournament.
Brooke Schwasinger’s round of 87 earned her fourth place. Kayla Stammer tied for fifth with an 88. Kate Brockevelt earned seventh place with a scorecard of 89. Allison Heine was eighth with a 90, and Elly Miiller tied for ninth at 91.
Last Thursday the Tanagers placed fifth in the Harrisburg Invitational, which was won by powerhouse Parkston, which had the first-, second-, fifth- and sixth-place golfers as their counters. Sydney Bormann of the Trojans was medalist with a round of 72. Sioux Falls Christian was runnerup at 337, Dakota Valley and Harrisburg tied for third at 358, and Vermillion scored 365.
Allison Heine’s 83 was good for seventh place. Other Tanager scores were Kayla Stammer’s 92, Brooker Schwasinger’s 94, Kate Brockevelt’s 96 and Kyleigh Moran’s 99.
