Vermillion claimed three individual conference champions and one winning relay team as the last Big 8 Conference track and field meet was held at Harrisburg last Thursday.
Mackenzie Huber was the champion of the girls’ pole vault with a best jump of 8’6”. Colin Olson edged teammate Austin Krier by .45 of a second to win the 400-meter dash, :52.13 to :52.58. Krier got his championship in the 800 in a winning clocking of 2:02.51.
The Tanager boys’ 1600-meter relay team also won a conference title with a tape-breaking timer of 3:33.97. Runners were Krier, Nathan Svendsen, Jeremiah Johnson and Olson.
Olson also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in :23.11. Alex Robertson earned team points in two events – fourth in the long jump at 18’10 3/4” and fifth in the high jump at 5’6”.
Vermillion relay teams were second in the medley in 3:59.40 and third in the 400 in :46.83 on the boys’ side. In girls’ relays Tanager teams placed second in the medley in 4:31.16, fourth in the 800 in :58.75 and fifth in the 3200 in 12:05.81.
Maddie Lavin placed third in the 3200-meter run in 12:02.74.
Madison won the Big 8 team titles in both divisions. VHS boys were fourth and girls fifth.
Vermillion lost a line in the final Big 8 Conference record book when a seven-year-old 300-meter hurdles record of :46.50 set by Nicole Orr of VHS in 2006 was snapped by Madison’s Cailyn Schreurs, who was timed in :46.27.
At a Lennox meet earlier last week the VHS girls’ medley relay team of Paige Olson, Megan Olson, Sydney Peters and Emma Lunning sped to victory in 4:36.7. The boys’ 4×400 team of Austin Krier, J.T. Sorensen, Nathan Svendsen and Colin Olson won their race in 3:29.7.
Maddie Lavin placed fourth in the 1600 in 5:30.1 and fifth in the 800 in 2:29.9, and the girls’ 4×800 quartet placed second in 11:36.1. In other boys’ relays VHS was second in the medley in 4:06.0 and third in the 4×800 in 9:07.3.
In the boys’ 200-meter dash Olson was third in :23.2 and Sorensen eighth in :24.0. Olson placed fifth in the 100 in :11.6, and Svendsen was eighth in :11.7. Svendsen also placed fifth in the 400-meter dash in :54.8.
Tanager tracksters competed in the regional meet yesterday (Thursday) at Harrisburg, their last chance to qualify for next week’s state meet at Lennox and Sioux Falls. Through last week’s meets Vermillion had these state qualifiers: Maddie Lavin in the 1600 and 3200, Mackenzie Huber in the pole vault, girls’ medley relay, boys’ medley and 4×400 relays, Austin Krier in the 800 and Colin Olson in the 200 and 400.
