Vermillion Post 1 wins one, loses one in tourney

Vermillion lost its first game as it played host to the Lewis & Clark Wooden Bat Classic Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1. The tournament was held at three sites: Yankton’s Riverside Field’s, Vermillion’s Prentis Park and Crofton, NE’s Baseball Park.

The tournament continued Saturday at all three sites, and championship play was held at Riverside Field in Yankton on Sunday. Mitchell rallied in the seventh inning to defeat Brandon Valley Post 131 7-6 in the championship game in Yankton Sunday afternoon.

Friday action in Vermillion

S.F. West 8, Vermillion 2

Jake Niedringhaus drove in three runs as Sioux Falls West scored six runs in the first inning and hung on for an 8-2 win over Vermillion in Friday’s first game at Prentis Park.

Connor Grove struck out six batters over six innings to get the win for West, while Justin Kautz added three hits.

Chayse Meierkort was 3-4 for Vermillion, while Collin Bertram added a pair of hits. Collin Olson went the distance and picked up the loss.

Saturday action in Vermillion

Vermillion 3, Brookings 2

The hometown team scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and Vermillion held on to beat Brookings 3-2 in Saturday’s first game. Saturday’s action at Prentis Park was pushed back two hours because of rain, meaning each game that day was trimmed to six innings.

The Brookings Bandits loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth inning, and scored a run on a walk. Consecutive ground outs ended the game.

Collin Olson was 2-3 with two RBI for Vermillion, and also got the win. Tanner Anderson drove in the other run.

Thomas McMacken and Gunner Peterson had the only hits for Brookings.
