The 15th Annual “Fathead Open” will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion. The Greg Nygaard Memorial Golf Social draws 144 to 168 golfers from California, Colorado, Oregon, Wyoming, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Georgia, Kansas, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Proceeds from the 4-person scramble have gone towards funding the Greg “Fathead” Nygaard Memorial Field as well as the USD Golf Team, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and USD Foundation.
Greg was the son of Jerry and Lois Nygaard, little brother to Mark, and a best friend to many. Born and raised in Vermillion, he was very active in wrestling, baseball, golf, hunting and fishing. As he grew up, softball became his sport of choice. Many a weekend Greg took left field, surrounded by close friends, a mitt in one hand and pure attitude everywhere else. He made people laugh and he knew how to show “the love” even though he rarely said it.
Greg’s life was cut way too short but we know he at least lived every minute of it to its fullest. We who are left behind continue in our lives with a promise to carry on in his spirit. From this the “Fathead Open” was conceived. We gather friends and family together to remind each other that loving and laughing is what life is all about. The “Fathead Open.” now in its 15th year, has sold out a Saturday in August at The Bluffs, fielding anywhere between 36 and 42 four-person teams each year. The 2013 version promises to be the fattest “Fathead” yet.
Greg has taught us all the importance of close friends and family and that a little love and laughter can be all you need in the world. It gives me great pleasure to honor my brother’s memory by bringing you the “Fathead Open” and ensuring that each and every August you can hear the laughter and feel the love flowing over the bluffs of Vermillion.
