The South Dakota Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) announces the City of Vermillion wastewater treatment system is the recipient of the 2012 Operation and Maintenance Wastewater Treatment Award.
This award is for outstanding operation of the wastewater system and environmental compliance with its state surface water discharge permit during the past year.
The award was presented during the 2013 South Dakota Water and Wastewater Association Wastewater Operators Seminar held May 1-2 at the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites in Pierre.
“Wastewater collection and treatment may not be the most glamorous topics to most people, but the men and women who maintain and operate these wastewater systems are every day area heroes in the fight to protect human health and the environment,” said DENR Secretary Steve Pirner, “Therefore, DENR is proud to acknowledge the job they do by presenting these awards.”
Qualifications for the Operation and Maintenance Wastewater Treatment Award are based on a system’s compliance with state environmental requirements, the quality of the treated and discharged wastewater, monitoring reports, state inspections, and proper operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility.
