University of South Dakota head swimming and diving coach Jason Mahowald is pleased to announce the addition of 15 student-athletes to his program. Each will compete for the Coyotes during the 2013-14 season.
“We are excited about the potential this incoming class brings to USD,” said Mahowald. “This is a balanced class with talented swimmers and divers alike. Many come from terrific high school and club programs that have prepared them to come to college and contribute immediately. It should be an exciting time around the pool this fall.”
A brief description of each student-athlete follows:
Jonathan Batchelor, Seattle, WA, butterfly
Swam for coach Andy Meyer at the Panther Swim Club, plans to study sports science and kinesiology.
Madison Bryant, Olathe, KS, distance
Swam for coach Hank Krusen at Olathe Northwest High School. Two-time all-state honoree, four-year varsity letter-winner. Named to the All-American Academic Team. Plans to study English.
Adam Fenton, Temecula, CA, free, back, IM
Swam for coach Josh Stone at Chaparral High School. Three-time team MVP at Chaparral. Holds school records in 500 freestyle (4:37.75), 200 individual medley (1:55.66), 100 backstroke (52.70s), and two relays. 2013 Southwestern League Champion in 500 free, 100 back and two relays. Became an Eagle Scout in 2011. Plans to study biology.
Greysen Hertting, Appleton, WI, diving
Dives for Tim Foulks at Neenah High School, earned NISCA All-America honors in 2012. Won 2012 DI WIAA state championship. Four-year WIAA sectional champion, four-time FVA conference champion, holds school’s 11-dive record of 507.85.
Tayler Kirtley, Overland Park, KS, free, back, butterfly
Swam for Kyle Farrington at Blue Valley Northwest High School. Has earned 12 top-10 finishes at the KSHSAA 6A State Meet. All-state honoree in 2011 and 2012, earned NISCA Academic All-America honors following the 2012-13 season. Four-year varsity letter-winner, two-time EKL 100-meter butterfly champion.
Erin Kleiner, Lakeville, MN, free, butterfly
Swam for coach Dan Schneider at Lakeville North High School. Two-time all-state and four-time all-conference honoree. Holds school records as a member of the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, holds the individual record in the 100-yard butterfly. Team captain in 2012. Plans to study nursing.
Jacob Knowles, Lockport, IL, breaststroke
Swam for coach Grant Ferkaluk at Lockport Township High School. Earned all-state honors in the 100-meter breaststroke, holds the school record in the event at 57.60s, five-time sectional champ and four-time state qualifier. Plans to study pre-physical therapy.
Berkley Nowlan, St. Albert, Canada, breaststroke, IM
Swam for Dave MacDonald at Paul Kane High School. Member of Olympian Swim Club for nine years, six-time provincial team member, provincial gold medalist, previous Canadian record-holder in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay (age group). Plans to study pre-medicine.
Michael Pellechia, Sussex, WI, distance
Swam for coach Blaine Carlson at Waukesha Express Swim Team. Competed on team that won Wisconsin Club State. Swam 1,650-, 1,000- and 500-meter freestyle at club state. Plans to study health sciences.
Allie Pfauth, Berthoud, CO, mid-distance freestyle
Swam for Jim Nickell at the Loveland Swim Club. Plans to study biology with a pre-physical therapy emphasis.
Katelyn Rieland, Watkings, MN, diving
Dives for Central Minnesota Diving Club. Plans to study veterinary medicine.
Samantha Schuttinger, Columbus, OH, free, backstroke
Swam for John Sands at Bishop Watterson High School. Two-time state champion, holds three high school swim team records. National team member of Ohio State Swim Club, six-time All-American, three-time all-state, all-district and all-conference honoree. Plans to study business and finance.
Daniel Shugar, Woodland Hills, CA, diving
Former gymnast turn diver who has a lot of growth potential in the sport.
Jaden Van Dike, West Des Moines, IA, breaststroke
Swam for Shawn DeBoef at Des Moines Valley High School. Earned All-America honors in the 100-meter breaststroke in 2013 – school record-holder in the event (57.34s). Also competed in football, soccer and baseball and is a first-team, all-state ultimate Frisbee player. Plans to study biology.
Anastasia Zabel, Victoria, MN, diving
Dives for Joy Grobe at Chaska High School and for Mike Hilber at the Minnesota Diving Academy. All-state diver who holds both pool and school records at Chaska, has personal-best marks of 263.55 for six dives and 310.65 for 11 dives. Voted team captain as a senior, earned five varsity letters in diving and two in gymnastics. Plans to study art education.
