The summer heat has not slowed down the Vermillion Area Swim Team as they have excelled in the pool yet again. The team has swum in both the Yankton Charity Invite as well as the annual Sioux Falls Snowfox Summer Invite this past weekend at Frank Olsen Pool in Sioux Falls.
Snowfox Summer Invite:
The Annual Snowfox Summer Invite featured not only teams from South Dakota, but also some great competition from teams in Omaha, Minneapolis and Iowa.
Last Friday night, in the girls 13-14 division, Madisen Martinez, Maddie Lavin, Lexie Malimanek and Araceli Topete teamed up to not only win the 400-meter freestyle relay, but also set a new South Dakota state record in the event. They clipped the previous mark, which was set in 1997, by just over one second.
But they were not done there. Saturday night, the same four again jumped in, this time for the 800-meter freestyle relay and smashed the state record again. Their overall time of 9:36.56 lowered the previous record by just over 36 seconds. They went onto win the event, touching the wall ahead of their competition by nearly 12 seconds.
Maddie Lavin took home the girls high point trophy in the girls 13-14 division for the weekend meet. She won the 100 and 200 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 1500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley during the meet and came in second in the 200 individual medley. Madisen Martinez was second in the high point awards, she won the 50 freestyle and was second in the 100 freestyle and 1500 freestyle.
The boys’ team for Vermillion also had a lot of success. Jacob Krier finished in fourth in the boys 15 and over division 50 meter freestyle on Sunday. He also clocked a time in the 200 freestyle on Friday night that has him now on top of the 15-16 age group in the state.
Gabe Telleria, 9, took home the third place trophy for the boys 9-10 division high point award. Hunter Lavin was fourth.
Other outstanding swims were turned in during the weekend by many VAST swimmers. Toria Andre had great swims all weekend. She turned in personal best times in both the 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly. Anna Hackemer dropped five seconds off of her personal best en route to qualifying to the Friday evening finals. She also shaved time off of her personal best 50 and 100 freestyles. Hunter Lavin also swam his was to a personal best time in the 100 butterfly on Sunday, dropping nearly 30 seconds from his personal best.
VAST will participate in the South Dakota Long Course State Championships in Brookings July 26-28. Currently, the team has 16 swimmers qualified for the event and numerous swimmers ranked in the top 16 in South Dakota Swimming.
