Wrapping up a summer full of fieldtrips and hands-on experiences, the USD Childcare Center held a day dedicated as Machine Mania to conclude their summer program. Dave Hertz, of Midwest Ready Mix, with the assistance of his son Ty, took time to drive a payloader to the Center to highlight the power and awesomeness of large construction equipment. As each class paraded to have their turn sitting in the cab, the children’s excitement was evident through their gasps of amazement and elated giggles of excitement. Even the teachers were impressed with the machinery as Ty demonstrated how some of the operations work.
What made this day particularly special is the integration of a local community business, community partners, and child discovery at its best. Research has shown that integrating community organizations with learning increases the aptitude for children to explore as well as fostering community commitment to education.
The USD Childcare Center intends to continue to implement efforts to build more collaborations with businesses as they begin developing upcoming programs for their fall schedule with a focus on brining science to life. As Dave with Midwest Ready Mix has proven the heart for children is alive and well in the heartland and the Centers efforts will be met by an enthusiastic outpouring from the Vermillion community.
