There will be ribs.
There will be rods – specifically classic cars, hot rods and even motorcycles.
And there will be plenty of entertainment for people of all ages as local citizens put the final touches on plans for the upcoming Ribs, Rods & Rock ‘n Roll event in Vermillion.
But that’s not all. Some new things will be included in the annual event that kicks off Friday, Sept. 6. with the 5 p.m. opening of the Rib Fest food court and beer garden in the downtown business district. Those two venues will stay open until 1 a.m. Saturday.
Also scheduled at 5 p.m. Friday is a performance by the Austin Beuscher Band. Other attractions that will be available at 5 p.m. that evening include a family fun area that will include sidewalk vendors. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., a “Wings War” with People’s Choice Judging will be held.
Friday’s activities will conclude with a performance by Mrs. Begley and the Boys. All musical entertainment for the two-day event will be held at the Ratigan Platz in downtown Vermillion.
Saturday afternoon, visitors to downtown will be able to observe a new activity to Ribs, Rods & Rock ‘n Roll – a Backyard BBQ competition.
“It’s for anybody – it’s typically for the amateur person who does a lot of barbecuing,” said Jenny French, a member of the Ribs, Rods & Rock ‘n Roll planning committee. “We’re doing ribs and chicken, and everything goes – however you want to grill it, smoke it, cook it works. It doesn’t have all of the rules and regulations like the national competition.”
This competition will be judged by local “celebrity” judges.
Saturday’s activities begin with the Eagle Rider Charity Poker Run breakfast and registration scheduled from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
Registration for the Classic Car and Cycle Show and Shine will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. The Family Fun Area and the Rib Fest Food Court and Beer Garden will re-open at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Judging of the South Dakota BBQ championship will be held from noon to 2 p.m., and the Dakota Classic Cruisers Car and Cycle Show and Shine will be held from noon to 4 p.m.
Larry Mart’s corn cob cooking demonstration will be held at 2 p.m., and at that time, the Backyard BBQ Judging and the South Dakota BBQ Championship judging will begin.
A poker run with two cash winners will begin at 4 p.m., and awards will also be presented to the South Dakota BBQ Championship winners at 4 p.m.
Saturday night entertainment includes Cartwright Brothers, who will perform at 5 p.m. The weekend celebration will conclude with a performance by Ledfoot Lucy, beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday.
About Ribs, Rods & Rock’ n Roll
Ribs, Rods & Rock’ n Roll is a Kansas City BBQ Society (KCBS) sanctioned event held annually in downtown Vermillion. Rids & Robs is the largest competitive barbeque event in the history of South Dakota. The primary purpose of Ribs, Rods & Rock’ n Roll is to expand and to promote a successful state event, to celebrate Vermillion’s rich barbeque history, and to welcome University of South Dakota students back to Vermillion.
That “barbecue history” can be traced back to 1940, when a group of barbeque enthusiasts from the Norway Township west of Vermillion came up with the idea to host a rib feed at an area where the Clay County rodeo grounds is now located.
