Buying a handmade pie on Saturday, Oct. 19, at your local Hy-Vee store will help save abandoned pets in the area.
The Heartland Humane Society (HHS) and Hy-Vee stores in Yankton and Vermillion are teaming up to host the inaugural I Spy Pie Benefit.
HHS board members will be offering the homemade pies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Hy-Vee stores in Yankton and Vermillion. The pies can purchased for $10 and come either pre-baked or ready-to-bake for a warm apple pie any time of the year.
“What a great item to buy now for Thanksgiving or as a Christmas gift,” said HHS director Kerry Schmidt.
The made-from-scratch pie fundraiser is one of many annual fundraisers to help cover the costs of veterinary care for HHS. Schmidt said the shelter has helped over 250 animals this year and is budgeting to help over 400 in 2014.
“We work with a very modest budget compared to other shelters in this region,” Schmidt said. “We are the only animal shelter actively serving abandoned pets in the surrounding area and every penny counts.”
Pre-orders can be placed by calling the shelter at (605) 664-4244 or e-mailing Schmidt at firstname.lastname@example.org
Orders need to be picked up on Oct. 19 during the event. Other arrangements for orders of six pies or more can be arranged with Schmidt.
All proceeds go to Heartland Humane Society.
