Dr. Eugene Dale Horrell was born Jan. 27, 1932, to Stanley and Doris Horrell. He attended grade school in Buffalo. Gene graduated in 1950 from Vermillion High School, and did his pre-med at the University of South Dakota. He received his medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. His surgical residency was at Tampa General in Florida and he became a renowned and respected hand surgeon in Detroit, MI, where he met his wife, Linda Gruber Horrell.
As the oldest of five children, Gene worked since he was a child. He delivered papers, helped his grandmother, Estelle Rouse at the family dairy, and helped his grandparents, Dale and Wanda Dunn, during summers at their ranch.
After a successful career as a surgeon in Detroit, Gene, a country boy at heart, retired to his beloved South Dakota, in Spearfish Canyon, where he enjoyed a life lived outdoors. Hunting and fishing with friends and family were just two of the many outdoor activities Gene loved.
Gene is survived by his wife, Linda; step-children, Tim Gruber, Sandra Gruber, Gerald Gruber, Michael Gruber; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; along with his aunt, Ruth Evanson; his sister and brother-in-law Gail and Jim Prins; his nieces, Debbie Ralls, Susan Leckband, and Nikki Lausmann; and many beloved cousins, great-nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Doris; his infant sisters, Virginia and Shirley; sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Tom Stennick, and their daughter, Melinda.
Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
