Ronald Duane Smith, 59, of Vermillion, passed away at Sanford Vermillion Hospital of Vermillion on Sept. 24, 2013.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Trisha Boese officiating. Visitation will take place two hours prior to the service. Burial was in BluffView Cemetery immediately following the service.

Ron was born on Feb. 16, 1954, in Hudson, to Gordon and Opal (Wold) Smith.

After graduating from high school, Ron spent most of his life working as a sales representative for various businesses in the area. In his free time he loved woodworking and raising his dogs. He was a giving man who spent much time caring for his mother, Opal.

Ron is survived by his mother, Opal Smith of Vermillion; his sisters, Janet (Dean) Voss of Loretto, MN, and Patricia Smith of Yankton; his nephews, Kevin (Heidi) Voss, and Scott (Amy) Voss; his great-nephews, Sam Voss, Jack Voss, and Ben Voss; and his great-nieces, Megan Voss, and Allison Voss.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Smith; and his sister, Carol Smith.

Services were entrusted to the Kober Funeral Home of Vermillion.

  1. Ron always sat next to me in school due to alphbetical seating for most of our years. I thought he was a very bright guy and very kind. So sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of him especially in 6th grade Four-Square recess games…he was a champ. A great Debater in high school as well. God’s peace be with you now.
