Tanagers quash Quarriers in volleyball action

By Scott Bormann

Vermillion rolled over the over-powered Dell Rapids team with a 3-0 victory in Vermillion on Tuesday, Oct. 8 The statistics show that the Tanagers have a strong defense, and they were bolstered by some great offensive output.

“The Tanagers resoundingly prevailed in their first ever meeting with the Quarriers,” said Coach Lenni Billberg. “Strong performances came from Chloe Nielson on offense, the continued defensive prowess from our libero Sarah Hughes-Berheim. The Tanagers continued a strong defensive front against an off-tempo Quarrier team. Outstanding leadership continues from seniors Melissa Chickering and Josie Huber.”

This may not be surprising when we look at the fact that the Tanagers (13-9) are leaders in many of the Class A statistics. The team leads the state in total blocks (142) and blocks per game (2.22). They are lead by two players leading the state in total digs (Sarah Hughes-Berheim with 380) and total blocks (Chloe Nielson with 55). Chloe Nielson is also #2 in the state for blocks per game (0.9), Melissa Chickering as #2 in the state in total assists (426), and Sarah Hughes-Berheim is #2 in the state for digs per game (5.94). This is just an abbreviated list of the Class A leaders that play for the Tanagers.

The Tanagers will next host Canton on Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m. Then Vermillion will host Beresford on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. I expect to have the results of both of these games reported on in the Oct. 25 edition of the Plain Talk.
