In the semi-finals of the Region 4A Volleyball Tournament, held Thursday, Nov. 7, at Dakota Valley, there was major battle between the Tanagers and Dakota Valley Panthers. Vermillion lost in three straight games (24-26), (16-25), (22-25).
These close matches are an old theme between these two teams. Vermillion won a close match back on Oct. 19, but lost on Halloween.
“It was a tightly contested match,” said Coach Lenni Billberg, “with both teams playing well.”
The Tanagers were led by Rachel Finnegan with 7 kills and 12 digs. Sarah Hughes-Berheim had an additional 12 digs.
With the region tournament being in a win-or-go-home format, the Panthers ended the Tanager’s season. Vermillion loses some great leaders in Josie Huber, Sarah Hughes-Berheim, Brandis Williams and Melissa Chickering to graduation, but they laid the foundation for future success.
“We have a very talented group of young kids ready to get their chance,” said Billberg. “Juniors Rachel Finnegan and Chloe Nielsen will lead a strong group of youngsters as we try to make our mark on South Dakota.”
The State “A” Volleyball Tournament will be held in Aberdeen, Nov. 21-23.
