United Way of Vermillion is joining #GivingTuesday to inspire people to take action to improve their communities and give back to help create a better world for everyone. On December 3, 2013 – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – #GivingTuesday will once again leverage social media to create a national movement dedicated to giving, just as Black Friday and Cyber Monday have been positioned to be synonymous with holiday shopping.
#GivingTuesday began last year, harnessing the collective power of its partners – nonprofits, businesses and individuals – to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in giving.
United Way is asking donors, partners and volunteers that are part of the United Way movement around the world to join #GivingTuesday. Everyone can find a way to give back – by giving, advocating (raising your voice to spread the word), and volunteering.
United Way of Vermillion is planning a number of activities for the day, including a social media promotion around giving and volunteerism on campus, recognition of campaign donors, and giveaways. Volunteers will be helping folks who stop by the United Way table in the Muenster University Center take “Unselfies” – pictures of themselves with a sign expressing how they plan to give back to their community. Anyone who tags themselves in their Unselfie on United Way of Vermillion’s Facebook page (http://facebook.com/UnitedWayofVermillion/), as well has all donors whose contribution is received by Dec. 3, will be eligible for prize drawings throughout the day.
“We’re really excited about this event,” said United Way intern and University of South Dakota senior Drew Vance. “We think it will be a great way to wrap up the United Way campaign and highlight the importance of giving – whether that means giving time or money.”
