The word around the proverbial water-cooler is that the Vermillion grapplers should have a very good season. The team will be anchored by Regan Bye and Brett Bye. Regan is the 145-pound state champ, from last year. Brett placed third last year, but is a four-time state placer.
“There was no summer for these two,” said Coach Hazen Bye. “After several camps and competing in tournaments, Regan and Brett are both ranked nationally in top wrestling rankings.”
The Tanagers are looking forward to a great 2013-14 season. They expect to see some new faces making names for themselves.
“Carter Kratz, Brandon Hertz, and Alex Osborn will see a lot of success,” said Coach Bye. “Seth Heine, Sineway Marshall, Trey Hage, and Kyle Seibel will be looking to take it to the next level. Overall, our team is working hard to improve themselves and the program.”
This year Vermillion is in a new Dakota 12 conference, which will provide some exciting wrestling, since it adds many new faces to the Tanager’s schedule. Practice began on Monday, Nov. 18 with 34 kids (7-12 grades) showing up. The Tanagers’ first contest will be hosting the Lennox Orioles at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. They then travel to Sioux Falls on Saturday, Dec. 7 to compete in a nine-team tournament in the main Roosevelt High School gym.
