At first glance, the Tanager girls basketball team seems as though it will be going through a rebuilding year this season. They have only one returning starter, Josie Huber, who is also their only senior. First glances may be deceiving, though.
“Sydney Peters and Shantel French both got some varsity playing time last year,” said new Coach Jon Brooks, “and will be looked at to fill in and play big roles.”
With a nice sophomore and junior classes that have a lot of JV experience, there will be a lot of fighting for spots on the team. There may be some pleasant surprises from the up-an-coming freshmen, as well.
The Tanagers have to weather some tough games early in the season, hoping to gain valuable experience for later in the season.
The team will start the 2013-14 season by traveling to West Central on Tuesday, Dec. 3 for a game that begins at 4 p.m. They will then travel to Elk Point-Jefferson and Bon Homme on the Dec. 10 and Dec. 13, before their home opener on Tuesday, Dec. 17 against Sioux Falls Christian.
Coach Brooks knows that “with not much Varsity experience we just need to get better every day and hopefully by the end of the year we will be very competitive.”
It may be a very difficult haul for this team, but they do have high hopes.
“Our goals every year are to win our conference and region and advance to the State Tournament, and anything can happen when you’re there,” said Brooks.
The new Dakota XII Conference should help this team stay focused and competitive with three of four games before Christmas vacation being against Conference foes.
